Year 7s trip to Oxford University

On 18th May 2017, ten Year 7 students went on a trip to Trinity College in Oxford. The ten students were going to ‘graduate’ from their recent assignments from the Brilliant Club.

These assignments included a 1500-word essay as the final assessment and many tutorials with a professional PhD tutor.  Their entire topic was based around Ebola with the focus as ‘Is Ebola going to be the next international pandemic?’

We left school at 7:30am and drove straight to Oxford.  Once we were there, we got on a park and ride bus to the centre of Oxford.  It was great seeing the sights and ancient buildings as we walked through the City of Dreaming Spires.  When we had arrived at Trinity College, we were greeted warmly by the Brilliant Club and we all settled down to a quiz where we had to guess the university from the photograph.  Soon after, Hugh Munro (the man in charge of the Brilliant Club) explained how he picked his university and his school life in the run up to choosing a university.

After that, we watched to a PowerPoint that had been made by Zoe, a recent graduate from one of the Oxford Colleges.  She explained to us the different courses we may be able to take when we apply for a university.  There were many choices and she explained how she picked her course.  Zoe also told us about the flexibility of how you can take your exams and the subjects within different courses, so you can choose something that you are really interested in.
After that we had lunch.  We really experienced the Great Hall and immensely enjoyed the intricate designs and patterns on the ceiling and walls.

After eating our lunch, we went on a tour of the amazing grounds.  We saw the buildings where different students sleep and the huge lawn where they play croquet in the summer.  We went through the beautiful chapel which was so extravagantly decorated and had a huge organ.  It also had many stained glass windows which light flooded through to make colourful puddles on the floor.

The part that everybody hugely enjoyed was the library that we visited.  It had a book that had come from Henry VIII’s library!  We also learnt many interesting facts about books such as books used to be chained to the shelves!  This was to stop people stealing them as books were very rare hundreds of years ago and were very expensive.  We were even able to see a first addition of Pride and Prejudice.  The librarians were very informative and the library was definitely a favourite place for everyone.

After that we graduated!  We were given our certificate’s and had loads of photos taken.  We went outside and then had even more photos taken!  After that we started the journey home and arrived back at school at 6:00pm.  Everyone was so excited and we all really enjoyed our day out!

A huge thank you to Mrs Dedman and Mr Dean for taking us and looking after us while we were there.
