Aspiring Geographers At The Olympic Park

A group of our aspirant geographers headed to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to see the legacy left behind by the Olympics

On Thursday 21st March, a group of our aspirant Geographers went out on a trip to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, home to the London Stadium, the London Aquatics Center as well as parklands, waterways and playgrounds. Students discovered the legacy of the games that we heard so much about during the Olympic bid back in 2005.

On arrival students were greeted by a tour guide who told them all about the park and took them to one of the most magnificent structures in the park, the Lee Valley Velo Park AKA the velodrome. Students learnt about the reasons behind the architecture of the building and the legacy of the impressive velodrome.

As students made their way through the green spaces with gently flowing rivers either side, the tour guide explained how many of the Olympic accommodation had been repurposed and converted into flats and terraced housing with some properties reaching around £1 million!

The biggest attraction of this tour was the Olympic stadium which is currently leased to West Ham United FC. Again, the legacy of the London Olympics was there. Even the Aquatics centre with its Olympic size pool was now open to members of the public. Many national events including basketball, rugby, sport relief, music concerts and other events take place in these buildings where the Olympics were once held.

Throughout the day students learnt that the Olympic site had been changed over the years. Going from an empty, contaminated and inaccessible poorer part of London, to a global place, to a green, open space with some of the best shops (Westfield) and most accessible place in London.
